In the 15th century, the St Gelais family controlled the whole Angoulême region. In the 16th century, they built the Château de Maumont in place of an older fortified edifice. Among the most notable members of this family is Octavien de St Gelais, a poet as well as bishop of Angoulême in the 16th century.
Often a favorite for its uniquely open bathroom, this superb room hosts a beautiful four-posted canopy bed. The view looks out on the main court and its century old chestnut trees.
